THE MISSION:
Northside Rotary Kidney Walkathon strives to enhance the quality of life for children, adults, and their families who live with kidney disease. The mission is to fund much needed research, raise awareness for kidney disease and organ donation, and to help our neighbors who are on dialysis and/or awaiting transplant. Together we can make lives better.
FACTS ABOUT KIDNEY DISEASE:
Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease in the U.S. with high blood pressure being the second most common cause. Other risk factors may include excess weight and/or family history. More than 3,000 Arkansans are receiving lifesaving dialysis treatments Approximately 300 men, women, and children in Arkansas are awaiting a transplant. 1 in 9 Americans have chronic kidney disease and may or may not know it. Kidney Disease is the 4th leading cause of death in the U.S. Over 96,000 Americans are waiting for organ transplants—the majority (over 74,000) waiting for a kidney. A new name is added to the waiting list every 16 minutes. Fifteen people die every day while waiting. One donor can save 7 lives.
